Old Hen Coffee Bar

Famous for their cold brew and waffles, Old Hen is no stranger to the cafe scene. A speciality coffee shop, the interior has an simplistic industrial design. The people of Old Hen are very passionate about the quality of the coffee they serve.

IMG_1080You may have seen this familiar picture repeatedly on every social media platform. Their cold brew has received positive reviews and is a must-try for all. For non-coffee lovers, go for their Valrhona Dark Cocoa. Both bottles are priced $6.50. Perfect for our hot tropical weather, diners never fail to order a bottle or two to cool off. In addition, don’t be surprised to see customers leaving with bottles in tow.
Smoked Salmon and Apple Toast: The combination of apples, raisins, cucumber and cream cheese make a great contrast to the savoury taste of the smoked salmon. Simply out-of-the-box and yet “delish”. Chicken Cheese Burrito: Shredded chicken, diced tomatoes, peppers, onions, melted cheese and homemade honey mustard all mixed up and wrapped up snuggly in a burrito. A hearty dish that promises to give you a satisfying and tasty meal. My companion really liked the dish but I was hoping for a more complex taste profile. I found it a little flat and sweet.

Croque Monsieur: Honey baked ham, bechamel(a rich white sauce made with milk infused with herbs and other flavourings) and melted cheese. Not the best I’ve tried but I love how unpretentious and cosy the dish is. Each bite guarantees you with a decadent mix of ham and cheese.

Never mind that “old hen” is a queer choice of name for a cafe, it is pretty smart to be honest. Despite its “ulu” location at Rangoon Road, the one-year-old cafe is easily crowded on a weekday late morning. The next time I’m back, I’m definitely giving their famed waffles a try!
